Overview
Finding the right school for a child with special educational needs can be one of the most stressful experiences for parents. England has over 1,000 special schools plus thousands of mainstream schools with SEN units, resourced provisions, or strong SEND departments.
PickMySchool's SEN Finder lets you filter by SEN provision type, see the percentage of pupils with EHCPs or SEN Support at every school, and compare nearby options side by side.
Types of SEN Provision
Special schools: dedicated schools for children with significant or complex needs. Usually require an EHCP to attend.
Resourced provisions: a specialist unit within a mainstream school for a specific need (e.g. autism, hearing impairment). Children split time between the unit and mainstream classes.
SEN units: similar to resourced provisions but often more self-contained.
Mainstream with SEND support: most schools have a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and provide in-class support. Quality varies enormously between schools.
Alternative provision: pupil referral units and other settings for children who can't attend mainstream school.

Regional Variation
SEN provision varies dramatically by local authority. Some areas (like Surrey, Kent, and Hampshire) have large numbers of special schools. Others (like some inner London boroughs) rely more heavily on mainstream inclusion.
Funding also varies: some councils are generous with EHCP top-up funding while others are tight. This directly affects the support your child receives.
The EHCP is the key document. If your child has complex needs, securing an EHCP that names the right school is the most important step. See our EHCP Guide for more.
Compare Your Council's Performance
To see how your specific LA handles SEND, browse our 153 LA SEND dashboards at /send. Each page shows how many EHCPs the LA issued in 2024, what percentage were issued within the statutory 20-week limit (national average: 46.4% excluding exceptions), what percentage of assessment requests they refused (national average: 25.5%), how many annual review decisions were notified within 4 weeks (national average: 44.4%, published for the first time in 2025), how many live EHCPs they maintain, and the primary need breakdown. At a glance you can see whether your council has stronger provision for autism, SEMH, SLCN, or other need types.
Known strong performers on timeliness include Barnet, Wandsworth, Windsor and Maidenhead (all 100% within 20 weeks in 2024). Halton leads on annual review decisions with 100% notified within 4 weeks. Known weakest on timeliness include Devon, Leicestershire, Portsmouth, and Kingston upon Hull (all under 6% within 20 weeks). Use the data; don't assume your LA is average.
